This year is the 35th anniversary of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens, which killed 57 people and thousands of animals, caused more than a billion dollars in damage, and laid waste to hundreds of square miles, 27 bridges, and 200 homes. If you were in Washington at that time, you probably remember exactly what you were doing when the news broke. In honor of the anniversary, a local production company wants to hear your story.
Draft 22 Productions, which is headquartered on Bainbridge, creates innovative content for film, television, and web. Their current project is a fictional, dramatic series set in the year of the volcano, 1980, on an alternate-reality Bainbridge Island. Filming is set to begin this fall, and the airing of the pilot episode is scheduled for October. To build excitement for the series, Draft 22 wants to record the actual experiences of people on that day to be released periodically online before the airing of the pilot.
Draft 22 is the baby of writer/producer Cheryl Cain, who has worked as a staff writer on Firefly, Roswell, and Threat Matrix and who has coordinated productions for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Profiler, and writer/producer Wendy Wallace, playwright and winner of the 2011 Ten-Minute Play Festival and creator/producer of Bainbridge’s Story Slam. Draft 22 is collaborating on the project with award-winning web series creator Liz Ellis from Bainbridge’s Honey Toad Studio.
So, got a story? Next Friday, August 7, from 5-8 p.m., during Arts Walk, you can share it. What were you doing when the mountain blew? How did the eruption affect you and your family? Your story will be recorded inside a green VW van/roving film studio known as Greta that will be parked in the lot downstairs from Eagle Harbor Books. If you’re not available at that time, you can arrange an individual appointment with the filmmakers by e-mailing wendy@draft22.com or calling (206) 992-6335. Bring photos and other memorabilia from that day if you have any to your interview.
