Here are Inside Bainbridge recommendations for the weekend of August 22-24, 2014:
1. The Salon, A Forum for Conversation: STRESS
When: Friday, 1:30-3 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: The topic is STRESS. Look, don’t forget to do your pre-salon reading. That would be TERRIBLE! And, please, make sure you think about the topic before showing up. Someone needs to figure out just what is stress, what the heck causes it, and why we’re so stressed. Maybe nothing is going to be resolved at this event. Or you’ll show up unprepared and everything will turn out the worst possible way.
2. 4th Annual Island Cup Youth Soccer Tournament
When: Friday, 2 p.m., Saturday, and Sunday
Where: Battle Point Park, Woodward Middle School, Sands Field
Why: The games are on. The fields will be jumping. Don’t miss the popular Island Cup Youth Soccer Tournament, with more than 70 teams from Washington, Oregon, and Canada and about 4,000 visitors. Watch kids ages 7-14 compete. Check out the schedule here.
3. Summer Movie Matinee: Back to the Future
When: Friday, 3:30-5:30 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Library, 1270 Madison Ave. N
Why: Two of my favorite decades squeezed into one movie in which hair gel has a speaking part. Skateboards, a kickass car, bad music, a soda fountain, time travel, and a sweet little town, just like Winslow. PG.
4. The Jesus Rehab with Specters
When: Friday, 7 p.m.
Where: Spacecraft at Rolling Bay Hall, 10598 NE Valley Road
Why: Because Spacecraft brings the coolest up-and-coming bands to the rock. This show pairs two duos: The hard-rocking Zeppeliny, White Stripesy The Jesus Rehab and the Specters, who are like XTC pressed into a Pinback pancake.
5. The Dusty 45s at Bloedel Reserve
When: Friday, 7-9 p.m.
Where: Bloedel Reserve 7571 NE Dolphin Dr.
Why: Combine the Dusty 45s funabilly rock with cool evening air on a picnic blanket and you’ve got a hot date. Don’t forget your food—and your date.
$26.
6. Ovation! Glee Camp Gala Performance at BHS Theatre
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: BHS Theatre, 9330 NE High School
Why: The campers have been working hard and they’re ready to show you what they’ve learned in one short week.
7. Rye and Barley
When: Friday, 8:30-11:30 p.m.
Where: Island Grill, 350 High School Rd Ne.
Why: Some instruments you can’t pronounce (bouzouki, bodhran), some you can, and two guys singing sea chanties and pub tunes.
8. Paint Out Winslow: A Plein Air Event
When: Saturday and Sunday, 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Arts & Crafts, 151 Winslow Way E.
Why: There will be nothing plein about the air when artists of all shapes and sizes hit the streets with easels and brushes and crayons and paint the town red, and blue, and green, and all kinds of colors. For artists 16 and up. The paint off is followed by a party at BAC with prizes for the winning works. A whopping $500 cash for first place. All mediums welcome.
Register here. $35.
9. Out(side)rageous Family Day at Bloedel Reserve
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
Where: Bloedel Reserve 7571 NE Dolphin Drive
Why: You can’t open the Bloedel to kids and families without a temporary repeal of the no food at Bloedel restriction. So bring the Tupperwares of Cheerios and a picnic and let loose to the tunes of Johnny Bregar and Recess Monkey. Plus dig into activities brought to you by Islandwood, KiDiMu, B.I.M.A., West Sound Wildlife Shelter, and the Boys & Girls Club of Bainbridge Island.
Kids get in free all day, and adult admission will be reduced to $10 for the event.
10. Weed Warriors
When: Saturday, 1-3 p.m.
Where: Fairy Dell at Battle Point Park.
Why: If you like hacking at ivy, this is your place. The Fairy Dell trail is overrun with the green English import, and the trees are suffering the consequences. Bring your gloves and lopers and get to work.
Park at the north lot off NE Frey Ave. and cross the street to the trail down to the beach.
11. Table Tennis
When: Saturday, 2-5 p.m.
Where: Waterfront Park Community Center, Huney Hall
Why: Smash that little white ball. The first hour is for Competitive Singles play. All skill levels and all ages welcome.
12. Island Theatre’s Ten-Minute Play Festival
When: Saturday and Sunday, 7:30 p.m.
Where: BPA, 200 Madison Ave. N.
Why: See what you can do in ten minutes. Read why here.
Free but donations welcome.
13. Paella on the Plaza with Chef Yolanda Ferrer
When: Sunday, 5:30-8:30 p.m.
Where: Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (Bistro), 550 Winslow Way East
Why: First, I’m all for anything that promotes alliteration. Second, let’s switch language gears here: Una cena auténtica de paella, ensalada, postre, y sangría con música latina de The Malo Combo. All that for just $4. You couldn’t get that in Spain for that price.
Three Seatings: 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30. For reservations or more information call (206) 451-4011.
